Lynwood Avenue Elementary School
November 1, 2019
Dear Lynwood Community,
Happy November! I am excited to announce that our Book of the Month for
November will be I am Yoga by Susan Verde. This year our Social and
Emotional Learning will focus around the framework of Emotional
Intelligence (EQ). EQ is the capacity to be aware of, control, and
express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships
judiciously and empathetically (Goleman, 1995). The 5 characteristics
of EQ are: Self Awareness, Self-Regulation, Motivation, Empathy and
Social Skills. Our Books of the Month for the remainder of the year
will focus on these characteristics.
I am Yoga illustrates in child friendly terms how to calm down and be
aware of your emotions through yoga postures. As you read this book, I
ask that you pay very close attention to the artwork created by Peter
Reynolds. His pictures are truly supportive of the text and will help
in the discussion of Mindfulness-Yoga. At the end of the book you will
find various yoga poses that you can explore with your students/child.
This is a wonderful guide for the beginner Yogi.
This is a great example of how a piece of Children’s Literature can
serve as a powerful tool for a positive change. As we continue to
deepen our understanding of Social and Emotional Learning as a school
community, our Books of the Month are a great support for exemplifying
how to get the conversations going at school and at home.
