Seneca Middle School raised more than $1,300 to be donated to Paws of War, an organization that places service and support dogs with United States veterans. The building held a home run derby fundraiser, and the winners of the derby presented the check to organization representatives and a service dog, Hero, during an assembly on Nov. 25. The representatives spoke to Seneca students about the Paws of War mission, as well as its programming and how the money they raised will help dogs, cats and local vets.

Students learn About Native American Life

Students learn About Native American Life thumbnail262716
Seventh grade students at Seneca Middle School in Sachem recently had the unique opportunity to attend a hands-on workshop during their social studies classes. During the workshop led by library media specialist Ms. Creedon, students explored authentic Native American artifacts, gaining insight into the diverse ways of life of Indigenous peoples across different regions.

Students learned how Native American lifeways varied based on factors such as the environment, available resources and cultural traditions. The workshop also highlighted how archaeologists and anthropologists study these differences to interpret archaeological sites and artifacts. By identifying shifts in culture, social organization and methods of obtaining food, students can better understand the rich history of Native American societies.

Ms. Creedon emphasized that a cultural period is a specific time frame marked by distinct features or conditions, helping students appreciate the complexity and depth of Native American history and culture.
