English As A New Language
Mission Statement:
To empower our students to become the best version of themselves through education as they strive to achieve their individual goals and become productive members of a culturally diverse world. This is achieved through a partnership with the entire Sachem community.
Instructional Program:
The Sachem Central School District and its Board of Education are committed to educational excellence and equity for our ELL students. Sachem provides an ENL program which spans grades kindergarten through 12. Our ENL students in Grades Kindergarten to Grade 12 receive specialized ENL instruction in stand alone services, as well as in integrated classroom settings.
Currently, Sachem employs New York State certified ENL teachers as well as Teacher’s Assistants in several of our school buildings. The teachers utilize training in co-teaching methods, language acquisition, linguistic theory, ENL methodology, and cultural sensitivity. The district follows the New York State Blueprint for ELL Success by assuming that its students are provided the same educational programs as those in the general population. The students learn English through social, academic, and real-life experiences to assist them in meeting the same rigorous educational goals as all students on their academic level. Sachem adheres to the units of study and staffing requirements as described in CR Part 154-2.
The ENL Program enables students to achieve the following goals:
- To apply English skills to achieve academically in all content areas
- To meet the New York State Learning Standards
- To use English in socially and culturally appropriate ways
- To be immersed in American culture.
Our district mission statement affirms that the Sachem Family works interdependently to develop leaders of great character who are competent, confident, and caring so our students become the best possible version of themselves. We have the support of the Board of Education as they ensure that all students receive the best education possible. Their philosophy is that we provide a safe and inclusive learning environment by respecting and recognizing the languages and cultures of all students as assets for our district.
