Former Pro Athlete Shares Story of Addiction & Recovery thumbnail262599

Former professional NBA player Chris Herren visited Sachem High School East on Nov. 19 to share his story of his struggle with addiction, and to empower students to make healthy choices. Students first watched a video on Herren’s basketball career – from playing in high school, college and the pros, to his ultimate downfall due to drug abuse. Herren then came out for an inspiring presentation where he discussed his recovery and how he now helps others struggling with addiction.

Since 2009, Herren has presented to more than two million students, athletes and community members about substance use prevention and wellness. Sachem East students learned about how addiction impacts families and were encouraged to start conversations around their health.

Sachem’s Model United Nations team held a successful mock conference focused on the right to clean water on Saturday, Nov. 16. The event, which was held at High School East, brought together students from both High School East and High School North for meaningful discussions and diplomatic negotiations on one of the world’s most pressing issues.

Participants represented various nations and debated strategies to address water scarcity, pollution and inequality in water distribution. Students also worked together to draft resolutions aimed at securing clean water for communities around the world, particularly in regions facing the worst water crises.

Mrs. Gearns, Sachem’s Model UN advisor, is very proud of the students who participated in the event and the active role the club’s leadership took in organizing the day, especially Tricia Block, Madyn Gassner, Ryan Medina, John O’Brien and Aarav Sehgal. Additionally, she congratulates Logan Ryan Schomaker for being named best overall delegate.

Sachem’s Model UN is dedicated to fostering leadership, diplomacy and global awareness through simulations of the United Nations. The club encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork as students work together to address global challenges and seek innovative solutions.

Students taking AP Human Geography at Sachem High School East conducted a field study of their high school campus. They analyzed building structures, types of regions, windows, technology, sports areas, images and icons, style of architecture and accessibility to find evidence of adaptation, history, tradition, human interaction and culture in the landscape. Students then completed a multi-level scale of analysis to demonstrate that patterns and processes of geography are all around us. Their observations of Sachem East’s spatial areas helped to show how the school’s local culture has changed over time.
