Sachem Salutes Local Heroes thumbnail262295
Students and staff across the Sachem Central School District saluted veterans through several events and activities ahead of Veterans Day. Many elementary schools held parades, with students inviting their veteran family members to walk the halls while their peers waved American flags and cheered them on. Additionally, some buildings held question-and-answer sessions for students to interact with local veterans and ask about their time serving our country.

Students Share Musical Talents at 2024 PEAK Festival thumbnail262062

Twenty-two of Sachem’s most talented fourth grade musicians shared their creativity at the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s Parents, Educators and Kids Music Festival at Northport High School on Oct. 26.

The PEAK Festival is an opportunity for fourth grade musicians to experience music activities while allowing parents and educators to join them in the fun.  Approximately 215 students from 24 school districts were represented during the PEAK Festival where they participated in several workshops exploring areas such as world drumming, folk dance, music games, body percussion, Spooky Beats, Drumtastic Alive and chorus. The festival culminated with a student performance that showed off their creative input and musical talents.

“PEAK provides students, parents and music educators a unique experience participating in workshops and performances together,” said Jennifer Fischer, Cayuga’s music teacher and co-chairperson for the PEAK Festival. “The smiles on the faces of all of those involved during the performance speaks volumes about the festival.”

Cayuga Elementary School celebrated the installation of its new Buddy Bench on Oct. 24. The Buddy Bench is a wonderful addition to Cayuga’s playground area aimed at fostering kindness, inclusion and support for all students.

The goal of the Buddy Bench is to create a safe and welcoming space for any student feeling lonely or in need of companionship. Students can sit on the bench, signaling that they are looking for support, a friend or simply someone to talk to. It serves as a symbol of community, empathy and connection, offering a place where friendships can be made.

The Buddy Bench project was inspired by the efforts of Cayuga teacher and P.S. I Love You Day founder Jaimie Miscioscia. P.S. I Love You encourages people across the globe to spread messages of love, kindness and hope.
